Good news, the Christmas countdown is here! Yes, 2020 has been a tough year and it will soon be over. Who would have thought in January that this year would be so difficult? There are only 18 days to go until Christmas.

This period is not easy for any of us and unfortunately some people won’t have the chance to meet up with their friends and family. In the next few days we would like to show that there has however been a lot of positive developments since 2015. We would like to bring some joy to the run-up to Christmas with some colourful photos and positive information every day.

The 2030 Agenda for sustainable development was adopted over 5 years ago. One could also say that this Agenda is the first ever global social contract. The global SDG indicators which measure progress in the implementation of the goals were adopted by the UN General Assembly in July 2017 and revised at the UN Statistical Commission in March this year. The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is held every July. At this Forum, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres presents the statisticians’ report. Based on complex information in this report, country representatives and civil society discuss the steps needed for the further implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Here you can read the latest report from July 2020, which is available in the six UN languages. We warmly recommend it to you: https://unstats.un.org/sdgs/report/2020/

This report by the UN Secretary-General is based on the data and statistics collected and produced by the national statistical offices. All these data and statistics are sent via custodian agencies to the UN Statistics Division (UNSD) where they are published. Here you will find all global SDG indicators, a treasure trove of data for anyone interested: https://unstats.un.org/sdgs/indicators/indicators-list/

Data and statistics are sexy, as we know! They help us to tackle challenges together. Only together can we protect the planet and improve our living conditions. The 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) give us the framework within which we can find solutions. Which is why we love the SDGs!

Every day, we will quote one positive development per goal from the report in the Christmas countdown. We hope that you will share these positive developments with your friends and families as #WeLoveTheSDGs. What positive developments can you highlight? Let us know via #WeLoveTheSDGs.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of staff at the national statistical offices, all UN custodian agencies and, of course, the UNSD that is maintaining its reporting even in these difficult times.

Together we will get through this time and, of course, we all hope to see each other again in Bern at the UN World Data Forum on 3 October 2021 at the latest!
